According to Nancy Pelosi, the Democrats and Republicans need to settle several disputes over what to include in developing the coronavirus relief bill as the pandemic wreaks havoc across the United States, and financial lines gradually approach their expiration.
The leaders in Democratic-held House and GOP-controlled Senate both agree that they need to approve more aid to combat the unstoppable spread of COVID-19 while supporting the economy and education. But with only two weeks before Congress decides on a plan for August, Pelosi still sees a ravine in the planning of the relief that she and her Republican counterparts want to bridge.
“They know there’s going to be a bill. … First it was going to be no bill. And then it was going to be some little bill. Now it’s $1.3 [trillion]. That’s not enough,” she told reporters Thursday in Washington.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said that Senate plans to disclose the entire relief plan next week. The republican has said, “kids in school, jobs and health care are likely to be the focus of the bill.”
Pelosi has proposed another direct payment scheme for individuals, while McConnell has said that he is open for another stimulus check. Both leaders have asked for federal funding to support the idea of reopening the schools in the fall.
But there is still contradiction between the leaders on several issues.
Congress has only a few days left to prevent millions of Americans from being left unemployed and from having empty bank accounts, as the $600 weekly federal unemployment benefit which was passed last March will expire by this month’s end. Last week, 1.3 million Americans filed new jobless claims as most businesses have been remaining closed due to the coronavirus outbreak.
While Democrats want to extend their enhanced health insurance, McConnell and Donald Trump’s top legal advisors prefer to end this fund as it left people making more money by sitting at home than they did at their job. It’s still unclear how lawmakers will design and plan future aid for the people who are struggling due to the ongoing unemployment crisis.
Democrats want to come up with assistance for homeowners and renters as the state eviction and foreclosure moratoriums start to expire around the country. Pelosi has called this issue “Very Urgent” and has said that Republicans have opposed the idea of housing relief.
Pelosi has proposed to send nearly $1 trillion relief for the states and local governments facing financial crisis due to the pandemic. McConnell has opposed the idea of providing financial aid for bad financial decisions made by the states before the pandemic hit.
McConnell has said that any bill will have to include liability protection for doctors and businesses. Democrats usually oppose the ideas, but Pelosi has said that she wants to see how exactly the GOP would structure a legal shield.
On the Republican coronavirus relief package, Pelosi said, “I don’t think they know what they want, they’re in total disarray … we have gone beyond the pale, they’re irresponsible.”
Kayleigh McEnany, the White House Press Secretary said, “They (Nancy Pelosi) are leaderless and this is a problem that has been going on for some time. We look back at 2010 where Republicans spent $50 million tying democratic candidates across the country to Nancy Pelosi into great success. We took back 63 house seats and that’s a very big deal. Nancy Pelosi is a huge problem for democrats and that’s why you see more than 20 democratic candidates across the country running against Nancy Pelosi, saying especially we don’t want her to be Speaker of the House.”
It’s not just the Democrats that don’t want her to be the Speaker of the House, there are also people from her own parties talking about how the minorities she is supposed to be appealing to don’t even want her in office. Elvira Salazar, the Florida Congressional candidate called Nancy Pelosi “A traitor to Hispanic”, when she appeared on the Tucker show very recently.
There are more than 20 Democratic candidates who are actively running against Nancy Pelosi. It’s high time Nancy Pelosi should get the message.
